The power of meeting in person

Penny Aspden reports with news from the EMCC UK Governors.

We met face to face as the current Governing Body for the first time in May, just before the annual general meeting. Making time to meet up and spend a longer period together in person felt special and so worthwhile. It gave us an opportunity to get to know each other in a natural and human way, and made us realise how important the small, incidental, unplanned conversations are.

With a mix of new and more established Governors, we had the opportunity to share and learn from each other. It gave us a chance to review aspects of how we work together and what will serve members and EMCC UK well in the future.

This was complemented by the AGM, which enabled the Executive Board and Governor members to meet in person and engage in discussion about achievements and performance over the last year. As each Governor member is linked with one or more of the Executive Board, it also gave the opportunity to develop these valuable relationships.

It left us thinking what other coaching connections do we have that would benefit from more face-to-face connection? Perhaps you would like to ponder on this too.

As a reminder, Governor Members form a critical part of EMCC UK governance. Governors provide a link to EMCC members, interacting with them regularly to understand their perspectives, interests and priorities. Governors act as a ‘guardian’ of the constitution, ensuring the Executive operate the organisation in such a way that the assets of EMCC UK are used in the best interests of subscription members. Governors meet regularly and their role is to support the Executive and hold them to account for strategic, ethical and financial delivery.

Annabel and Penny hosted the first Governor Forum in June. This is an informal discussion space for members to discuss their experience of EMCC UK membership, whether it provides them with what they want from EMCC UK as a professional organisation, and any ideas or requests they would like to share for the Governors to take forward. We’ll be posting more about what came up in this first forum in the August newsletter. Watch out too for future Governor Forum dates.
